I had an uncle Sal. Half the guys in Brooklyn used to be named Sal. It’s a super common Sicilian name and it’s not after the country. I also had an Aunt Lucia, come to think of it.

I’d pick one I have connection with. It would be weird to call your child Jamaica or Switzerland or Syria or Bhutan when you have no connection to the country.

Do you really not know what "Sal" is an abbreviation for, for Italians?!
