Tell me about Amherst

Faculty is top notch as well. Old professors like living in a small elite college town near Boston. Since a good majority is admitted on full or generous financial aid, alumni feel grateful and many are helpful to pay it forward.

Yes and also poor and underprivileged minority kids and for athletes too.

Our DD ED'd Amherst and is now an upperclassmen. She is thriving there academically and socially. The so called athlete divide is blown out of proportion at least for her. She has both friends in varsity and friends not in varsity. She much prefers a smaller school compared with her sibling's large university where one can easily get lost in the crowd and where professors don't get to know you.

Not many Asians, ones there tend to be international or recently migrated first generation college kid, with exception of some wealthy ones. Too expensive for UMC and two good income families due to super high cost with aid.

Such small schools have some advantages and some disadvantages just like large schools have theirs. Mid size schools of under 10K population and undergrad focus are usually a better fit for majority.
Anonymous
If your kid fits in, it can be a happy place, if not then its a small cold town with not much to do if you aren't an athlete and party/drinking/soft drugs aren't your scene.

Amazing for students with need, financial aid covers everything from winter clothing and local flights to international trips and semester abroad.

There’s also a big athlete scene but they’re also all very good students. I always recommend Amherst to folks considering a SLAC but hesitate now because of how crazy they went over COVID. Maybe give it another couple years to see if they don’t revert to their insane policies.

You anti-vax people simply can’t help yourselves. It’s pathological.

She’s not referring to requiring a vaccine. People who think these level of restrictions were reasonable (nearly 2 years in to the pandemic and post widespread vaccine availability) for a population that is statically among the lowest risk are the ones who are pathological.

PP alumni here. Yes it went way beyond vax mandates. I supported vax mandates when we believe they reduced transmission but think they’re pointless and divisive at this point. (My whole family is vaxxed btw). It was just crazy what the college did. They literally banned socializing for like an entire year. It was very much akin to the China approach for a long, long time. .

To say they banned socializing or they were akin to China's approach is just fearmongering and gaslighting. You may not agree with the policy, but Covid is still killing millions of people not to mention the huge wave of long Covid that is going to hit our society over the next few years. For those who don't believe in vaccines or masking, go elsewhere.

Coronabro! How you doing? Shouldn't you be in line for another booster right now?

Doing great, no Covid unlike you. Perhaps you and your anti-vax, anti-mask brethren should all go to an island (much like a leper colony) and develop herd immunity

You're right, coronoabro, I did get Covid, way back in 2020. It lasted maybe 48 hours. I've felt worse after eating a bad batch of bacon. And then you know what I did after that? I lived a normal life. No "staying home to save lives" (which didn't even work according to the data). No "my mask protects you, your mask protects me" (also debunked by data). No sticking a needle in my arm every few months (ditto). It's been pretty great. You should crawl out of your basement and try it.

You must be pretty dumb. You keep throwing the term around like you invented but you're so dumb you don't even know what it means. Ordinarily, I would just tell you to research it but because you're so ignorant and don't even realize you are, let me at least tell you the term does not refer to someone who believes in vaccines or masks.

If you still believe in masks, you have no standing to call someone else dumb.

Go on believing that. You probably also believe that injecting Clorox into your veins will cure Covid. There is no cure for being dumb like you.

Not OP but masks saved me from getting cold, flu and covid during pandemic times. I'll always wear one in crowded indoor spaces.

15% Asians, more than peers such as Williams. And majority is domestic, not international.

From reading this forum, it seems to me that fit is the most important when choosing a college. But I guess every student and their families ought to know that already. Don't go to a college for perceived prestige. Go because it is the right fit for you academically, socially, and otherwise.

Ours decline Amherst after visiting, it felt remote, looked great for summer but not for winter, athlete- non athlete divide was clear and division of dorms according to race/sexual orientation etc felt odd and last but not least their full pay cost is too high.

That being said, if you feel comfortable going there and get financial aid, its a great school and can hook you up with many opportunities. Their alumni is small in numbers but truly like a cult and very well placed in world.

wait what? Is there a racial divide on dorms? That cannot be true. This would be a no go if true. I am actually doubting this. Can someone shed light?

Did a bit more digging and came across this, which helps explain some of the very defensive Amherst posters on this thread:

A lot of elite schools, including Amherst offer “affinity housing”, where racial/ethnic/sexual minority populations can elect to live with people who share their background/culture. Yes, it looks a lot like segregation but as it’s in the name of creating safe spaces and self selected by members of these groups apparently okay.
