Just buy the 7 year warranty. You kid will total it long before warranty runs out. My kids new Chevy she totaled it in 4.5 years. They refunded remainer of 7 year warranty.

My mom gifted her 2013 VW Jetta to my son - only about 37,000 miles and in great shape as she rarely drove it. It was no longer safe for her to drive due to her cognitive decline so giving the car to her grandson was a good solution.

we did not buy her a car rather let her drive ours since we both work from home and when we go into work we take public transit. it was also the car she learned to drive in and is on the smaller side with plenty of safety features so we thought she would be safe.

She has had her license for 3 months and backed into the garage yesterday.

We are looking at the XC40 or maybe a Mazda CX-30. I like the safety features and size of both. My concern about the Volvo is that it has too many distracting screens/electronics, but I haven't test driven it yet.

If we didn't have the car to hand down to her we would've purchased something similar - used, 5-7 year old Japanese sedan. I wouldn't buy a new car for a teen, personally.

Shopping in 2022 was a unique experience, we had planned to buy a used Toyota/Honda, but it made no sense when we saw the price tags.
