College for anxious, smart, somewhat socially awkward kid

+1 My DD fits OP's description, and she's headed into her second year there.

But also have to say, I agree with the don't pigeon-hole your kid. If you are going to anyway, then I'd stay away from the small places because if they don't find their people, they can get really lonely. I know a kid now who did not find their people at Oberlin and is considering transferring. It's just so small.
