Moving to MoCo from out of state — W schools are not an option

If that's not possible and W schools (including BCC) are not an option, then I'd try PHS (non-magnet part), QO or RM (in that order). As PP said, MCPS is a dumpster fire (and it's been like that for a number of years). It is not getting any better. For full disclosure, I've a resident of MoCo for over 30 years and raised 3 kids here.

Are you over 60 with no kids currently in MCPS? Apparently studies show current parents in MCPS, like me, are generally happy with the quality of education. Those most vocally anti-MCPS are over 60 and don't even have kids in the county schools. I don't work for MCPS, but it explained a lot when I read it.

Not over 60 yet. That makes a lot of sense because those older folks understand how MoCo/MCPS used to be. By the time my youngest came out of MCPS, the school system was nothing like the one we started with. It's too bad you don't know what you are missing and how great it used to be.

I hope to God that when my kids are long since done with high school I will not feel the need to be trolling message boards flaming the school system.

Yes, they have a romanticized view of a past that never was. I actually went to MCPS 30 years ago and I can assure youit's 100X better today.

Actually I'm comparing it to the high ranking high SES schools that propelled me to a Top 10 university. I'm confident MCPS can do the same for my kids.

More backdoor recruiting from the privates?

I don't see any backdoors here. I would avoid MCPS if I could do it all over again....

Yep more backdoor recruiting.

People, people I am going through the front door. MCPS is a dumpster fire right now.

And yet none (be it privates or other jurisdictions) seems to be able to beat MCPS in anything remotely competitive.

By any objective measure yes, MCPS beats all these other counties by a wide margin. Even VA's vaunted TJ, America's No #1 HS, loses consistently to Blair in every academic contest. The issue here is that MCPS is great if you value education and take some personal responsibility. If you want a school system to raise your kids, Howard is probably a good bet.

5th in the state of Maryland is vaunted? Okay….I’ll have what you are having.. try half of MCPS third graders struggle to read at grade level.

Notice how MCPS posters always focus on one school program: Blair magnet.

Try 32% of the State third graders and 28% of the nation third graders struggle to read at grade level.

LOL, NO. This thread is not even about Blair magnet. MCPS has lot of programs where they dominate nationally.

Both Blair and many W's have impressive college admission stats. A great education is available to anyone who wants it.

Then why the Kirwan Commission report saying otherwise? 4 BILLION more on our public schools! You can’t have it both ways….
MCPS is the largest district in Maryland…

Now if you said Massachusetts was number one I would agree. Moco is no where close to MA schools despite what you tell yourself when you write that property tax bill every month.

So your standard of how well we're doing is how poorly everyone else is doing ?

First what does the Kirwan commission have to do with MCPS programs that dominate nationally?
Second Massachusetts is a STATE and MCPS is school district on a county level.
Idiot.

No, the point is reading at grade level is poor all over the country but MCPS is way above average
