Middle School Recess coming to FCPS

Anonymous
I grew up in Europe and we had two breaks a day (plus lunch break on long days) all the way until graduation. We just hung out with our friends. It was great and normal.

I don't really understand why ppl think these kids don't need ir wavt recess? They stopped giving us recess in 6th grade and it sucked. So our homeroom teacher on nice days would take us outside to play a class game of something. Kids all loved it.

We had long lunches, so that there was plenty of time to eat and then to talk with friends and hang around outdoors. Not exactly recess but a good break.

PE is structured and 95% of kids past 6th grade HATE PE

Maybe fcps should revamp their boring overly structured PE program

Not normal for here though. It's sad.

They should just extend the time between two classes to 15 minutes every day and call it a break. The kids don’t actually need to go outside where there is nothing to do. This is ridiculous.

Or just let the kids have recess. Why are so many against kids having recess.

We're talking about kids between the ages of 11-14 why is it ridiculous that they go outside and play?

13-18 y o kids in many European and South American schools have recess . Why did it take so long for FCPS to make this happen?

She misses class time and potentially important information. She is at a disadvantage to the boys who don't need to leave the classroom to use the bathroom on a regular basis.

I teach middle school. In my experience, the boys leave the room to use the bathroom or fill their water bottles at least three times more often than the girls.

That’s exactly what they already do now. The problem is, most of these posters don’t actually have kids in middle school. They have a 15 min break every day. Look for yourself below. Every other day, they have a full block of mandatory study hall that’s basically a break. They can’t go outside for that but the parents worried about missing class for the bathroom should feel better. They can go outside for lunch every day if they want to. https://kilmerms.fcps.edu/about/bell-schedule

^4th period Advisory Paws is the homeroom/study hall time where they can work on anything, do nothing at all, play on the internet or go see other teachers. It’s a study hall.

Here’s another MS. Same thing but their break is next to lunch. Are there any that didn’t already do this? I think this is all elementary parents worrying over nothing. https://jacksonms.fcps.edu/about/bell-schedule

Anonymous wrote:I taught middle school for years and years. The last week or two of school when kids weren’t dressing out anymore and SOLs were done, the PE teachers used to take their kids out on the field with a zillion balls and jump ropes and hula hoops and toys/equipment. The result was the teachers and 10% of kids playing, and 90% staring at phones in isolation sitting around the edge of the field. It was creepy. I saw the same thing at multiple schools.

A 15 minute break without being forced outside or being given equipment and direction is going to result in 99% staring at their phones for those 15 minutes.

School social worker here. Yep, pretty much this!

PE is 1/2 health - which is sitting and listening to why they should exercise more. In addition, most FCPS middle school PE classes combine regular classes so they are 2 and 3x the size of a normal class. 80 to 90 kids learning badmitton isn't exercise. Plus, it doesn't give kids time to chat in an unstructured way - which believe it or not, kids do need the same way adults do.
