This seems like a silly chain. What's the point?

They do this every year. I feel like it just gives some false hope for those that are waitlisted.

How is it false hope? If you see a bunch of people turning down your first choose and you are waitlisted, it absolutely means there is a chance you’ll get a call. Seems like logic to me. Not hope.

Schools know their typical yield and account for it in their admission numbers. It doesn’t mean they won’t go to their waitpools, but just because you see that 10 people are declining spots for 9th at X school doesn’t mean there will be spots. School X likely over-admitted by 20 or so.

Is 3rd even an entry year for any of these??

Yes of course. Holton starts at 3rd grade. Sidwell has 12-15 spots for 3rd, Bullis and SR take a few 3rd graders every year. Primary Day ends at 2nd grade and kids attend all of these schools for 3rd grade every year.

Additionally, the posts here are not statistically significant enough to give sufficient info and data points. Five people on DCUM turning down one school does not mean a school will now go to its waitlist.

The schools admit more students then they have space for and expect some to not accept. In many grades they never go to a waitlist.
