Riders refuse to pay on more than one-third of all Metrobus trips

Unfortunately, the DC government wouldn't consider tax evasion a crime since it's a crime of opportunity primarily commited by the underprivileged in DC.

There are different kinds of tax evasion. One by empoyees and the other the employer. I reported tax evasion and wage theft to the DC and federal government, and no action was taken, even though my employer did this to others.

The DC hour and wage office employees were rude and dismissive. They basically were stitting around lounging, behaving as if I was bothering them and interrupted their afternoon nap at their desks.

There's probably a mean old rich guy somewhere who can pay for all the stuff we don't want to have to pay for, right?

If you want to ride the bus, stop being such a fcking pathetic mooch and pay to ride the fkcking bus.

Yes! This is what the woman who has lived at the bus stop for 30 years says all the time. Yes 30 years. She thinks the rich in ward 3 should buy her a free home because she's a "precious life". And "cuz she ain't got one" and "that's what BLM is about". You would lose your mind talking to her. It's the white man's fault. No personal responsibility. Everything is free, just take and do as you please.

Why do you keep going on about this one woman you know. Yeah, she sounds like she's entitled and probably mentally ill, but I'm not sure why you think writing about her endlessly is making some kind of profound point?

She applies to all of these different threads. New posters on different threads comment on how badly they need homes. It doesn't seem like they realize what happens after they move in next door. I'm just trying to give examples of why an apartment is a bad idea for everyone except the landlord. The new posters in different threads seem to have no insight to these issues.

The fare evasion isn't just a mental illness issue, but lawlessness. Some know they can get away with this crap in DC. I don't think SF CHI or NY have transit losses due to fare evasion anywhere near what DC has.

You do understand that people in permanent supportive housing programs get wraparound services too, right? The chronically homeless person given an apartment is not just left to their own devices. They’re assigned a social worker and given mental health services as needed.

A social worker can't think for these people and be at their side daily to tell them to use the bathroom instead of relieving themselves in their pants or out in public. They aren't there each day to make sure they take out the trash and shower. I'm sure many have no idea how to use an oven or washing machine.

A social worker doesn’t have magical skills or an
authority to be relevant. They'll never be seen again after dropping the homeless off at the Connecticut Ave property.

Providence Hospital and St. Elizabeth's could immediately serve as permanent lockdown housing for these people. That would be far more appropriate than Connecticut Ave.

This week in NYC a homeless man followed a woman into her apartment building a stabbed her to death. I'm sure he didn't kill her because he was "unhoused".

Also a church on the upper west side had to barricade their steps where a group of homeless Mexican illegals were sleeping and doing unspeakable things. They relocated to the median on Broadway. Since NYC is a sanctuary city, they can't be deported.

One point of correction: That's not what "sanctuary city" means. Illegals can indeed be picked up and deported in "sanctuary cities" and it does in fact happen. But, ICE has to do it themselves, they can't sit back and expect NYPD to pick the illegals up for them. They can't expect bailiffs and others to sit around for hours waiting for ICE to show up at a court house. ICE has to do its own work.

^ I think ICE is intentinally not going after anyone with the change in administration.

Now NYC is reporting the same percentage of fare evasion.

It actually would be great to be free. And doable. Metro pays more for fare collection than the fares it collects. Just make it free and reduce the expense. Offset free trains with parking fees.

This is not fare evasion- half the time I get on the bus the driver drives me through, probably does it 90% of the time I am with kids and 90% of the time that more than five people are getting on at the same time. I have my card out ready to pay, I am not evading the fare or refusing to pay

I am irritated by the wanton and gratuitous fare evasion on Metro, but it's hard for me to want people to be arrested over this considering I had a WMATA cop threaten to arrest me for wrongly believing I snuck through the turnstiles without paying. This had to be in 2013 or 2014. Cop accused me of squeezing through the turnstyles. When I called his bluff and said let's ask the station manager what the card said, he told me to get off the system or I'd be arrested. What a jackass. I know how it feels to be on the wrong end of a lying cop. It's not worth the $2.00.

At the end of the day, WMATA fare evasion is a rounding error. Metro doesn't even know how much fare evasion actually takes place on Metrorail. Metro is always going to be in this boom and bus cycle of funding. Enforcing fares at the threat of arrest will not change that.

This is disgusting and sounds like something that would happen to me. Typical of how they always go after the wrong people.

Around the same time, I had an exchange with a bus driver. He tried to order me off the bus for non payment. I had the money, but the machine kept spitting out my money. I handed it to the driver but he refused to take it. He said I had to come up with another dollar or get off because it was taking everyone elses dollars.
