Is Shakespeare not taught in DCPS?

I promise Shakespeare isn’t the only author who helps student’s comprehension. The fact that there is a whole thread on this is a testament to white privilege.

And yes, I am bringing race into it because once again, you fail to see how complaining about this makes you look. Mostly not that it was asked but the ignorant comments alluding to teaching about black, brown, Asian, native people is ‘too political.’

And we live in a politically charged world, everything is actually about politics. So yes there will be more and more minority authors studied that YOU, old white mom, may not have studied and that’s ok.

Your child will not fall into a cesspool of illiteracy and lack critical thinking.

Also who says Shakespeare isn’t being studied? I graduated from walls less than 5 years ago and I did study Shakespeare.

lol

You never took AP English.

i love watching you all put each other down and attempting to sound smart about literature. none of you are doing this right

And how would doing it right look? Do, please, enlighten us.

Not that PP, but I want to hear more from the poster who claims she "took AP English through HS" and the poster who thinks she "took 2 terms of old English." Those are the real intellectual powerhouses here, people.

Your arguments sound like this:

Something something… white privilege. Something something … center people of color experiences. Something something… racism.

Frankly your argument is not compelling at all. I want my child to study literary works that make them a better person, writer and more thoughtful reader, regardless of the skin color of the author. Yes, race is one factor contributing to the human experience, one of the many. Include Frederick Douglas, but also Shakespeare.

You sound incredibly one dimensional.

Hyperventilating about white privilege rather than making a cogent counter-argument on what works by minority authors should replace Shakespeare? I don't know that you are a shining example of DCPS producing children with critical thinking skills. But I do think your substance-free rant is a perfect example of toxic politics.

Methinks there would be more substance if he/she/they could remember if the AP class was in HS or in college

Ah, I checked back to see if the salty old white women would try to disparage my intellect because they didn’t like my answer. Nice you all met my expectations.

But I’m a little dissatisfied, I didn’t get the ‘word salad’ comment.

And just an FYI I wasn’t making a point for Shakespeare being removed, more like just laughing at this thread, that is just so white mom. What will you do if Karen and Brad don’t learn about Shakespeare in school?!

I think because DCPS can be or is trying to really be more black and a little more non-white hispanic focused some of you forget the real world is not. I’m sure their university English class will talk about Shakespeare. Or hey, you can have them read it for a leisure activity.

In the real world, mediocrities who use identity politics to try to sound sophisticated usually end up being exposed for what they really are: poorly educated

It’s not about race. It’s about ENGLISH. Shakespeare is an foundational writer of English literature , and we happen to speak English here in the US and schools here operate in English. That doesn’t mean we aren’t diverse in race, heritage, culture, etc. but in English and Language Arts, the writers studied — whatever their demographics - generally write/wrote in English.

The United States does not have an official language, just an FYI. You can stop the colonial dream speak now.
And I like Shakespeare, it’s being taught. I’m just saying only DCUM would make a whole thread on this.

You are doing very good at disparaging your own intellect.

But...did you take AP English through high school and college, and did you take two semesters of Old English?

Sorry to break it to you, they don't consider you a friend. It's the word salad, they couldn't ake it anymore.
