I want to get a book for my DS(who is 8 years old) that talks about how different everyone is,but equal in the inside.
Race,handicap,hair color + others. Any suggestion? Thank's! |

I know this isn't exactly what you asked for, but your son will learn this best by seeing his parents treat people kindly. Let him see that all people need something that each of us has to give.
I love that you care. |

There are some really good books about diversity. I send my kids to a summer camp and weekly afterschool club run by Little Friends for Peace (www.lffp.com) and they spend most of their time teaching the kids acceptance and celebration of our differences. They have lots of books there. Here are some titles that I'm familiar with:
Welcome Comfort Charlotte's Web (even a little spider can be a great friend and hero) Patulous, The Different Caterpillar Mrs. Katz and Tush The Sneetches by Dr Suess Crow Boy Masai and I Baseball saved us Clyde the Glyde and the Carnival Ride I'm Like You, You're Like Me It's okay to be different All the Colors of the Race (poems, may be better for age 10+) The Rainbow Zebra |

Correction - the website for Little Friends for Peace is www.lffp.org

This might be a little too mature for him (my ten year old liked it) but "Rules" is a great chapter book about a twelve year old girl who has an autistic brother and finds herself falling for a boy with cerebal palsy.
Incidentally- reading books is a great way to get kids to unerstand what Downs is and isn't, My sister got married to a man who has five younger siblings with Downs and it helped her to be a friend to all of them. |

Now that we know that the issue is a relationship with a peer who has Down Syndrome, here are the books recommended by a down syndrome parenting group. What's wrong with Timmy? by Maria Shriver looks good.
