where to go for a long weekend in the winter less than 2-3 hours away

We're thinking about a winter weekend with a bunch of families & kids. Want to rent a big house somewhere--- but where would you go? Not a lot of skiiers and we want to be closer than Deep Creek.

Thoughts?

We are like we thinking Greenbriar or Wintergreen for winter break trip. We like to ski and are beginners so don't need amazing conditions but i think that is too early in season for skiing? So what winter activities do they have with or without snow? We like family activities, rather than kids club + spa options (we tend to hike together, love the pool and beach, ropes courses, etc). Kids are 9 + 5, so what would a span of 4 days be like at these resorts?

Warm Springs area in Virginia near the Homestead. You can do the family hours at the Jefferson Pools, and the Homestead has skiing, snow tubing, and ice skating. Hiking in the hills around Douthat State Park etc.
