Sports and Organized Activities for 5-7 yo girls

Anonymous
For my older son, moms were always organizing weekend sports leagues such as basketball, baseball, and soccer.

I want my daughter to also have some physical activities for the weekends, but we haven't received any invitations for leagues and she has lost interest in gymnastics and ballet pretty quickly.

Any suggestions on how to expose her to activities so that she will develop her own sports interests and hobbies ?

We are in Montgomery County, by the way.

Good age to try softball. That's not until Spring, though.

I've never heard of moms needing to organize their own leagues for kids' sports. There are tons of options for you and your daughter and you don't need an invitation. Look up Montgomery County Parks and Rec, YMCA, and the site Activity Rocket.

I think soccer is probably the most common option at this age. Soccer and softball tend to both be two-season sports around here, which can make it difficult to do both. If your daughter likes to be active and run around a lot, I'd probably start with soccer. (Winter basketball should be picking up now too, now that soccer is over for the fall.)

Around here, you also have LAX, but they need a little more coordination to run around with the stick and the smaller ball.

In Northern VA, they have girls LAX for those in K and up. They might up in MD, too.
What about indoor swim/swim team?

Lots of options for skating, Probably a little late for hockey leagues. It's good at that age but most programs are full by now....

At 6 my daughter was playing soccer, basketball, LAX, golf and swim team. At 8 she's doing the same. I don't agree with the notion that parents have to link up with other parents. We just moved to a new part of the country and immediately joined a golf club and got her into soccer. I asked for recommendations for leaguesbon next. Door and from new friends and neighbors. Signed her up. Why is your daughter any different than your son?

League play has started, but new sessions for learn to skate and learn to play should be starting in January. IN the meantime, open skate!

Ice skating lessons at Cabin John rec center are year-round I believe. I would always schedule the lessons so DD could have some free skate time right before or after as the lessons are only 30 minutes. One session includes skate rentals and free skate time.

Mine is 5 and does year round swim team, soccer, lax, gymnastics, and starting golf this spring.

Ask around. My DD is in 2nd grade. She started soccer, basketball and lacrosse in kindergarten. In first we added some swim team and now she's ice skating for a session. Most of these are county leagues with friends from school.

What is LAX? I thought that was an airport.

I'd look into chapters of Girls on the Run, OP.

We are in NOVA but my 6yo loves soccer and played on a team in the fall. She wants to stay with it and will do the winter session in a month then the spring if she's still interested or try softball. This isn't her first year. We moved but there have been leagues in both areas for her and my older son. We have never needed to coordinate through other parents.
