Just received my kindergartener's report card and am having a hard time deciphering it. He's doing well on almost everything but received ones on social studies and science. My understanding is that in K the kids don't study these subjects. When we had our parent teacher conference, the teacher also said that the kids don't work on science or social studies. I'm not stressing over it because I realize it's kindergarten. I'm just trying to understand what it means to get a "1" on these subjects when the kids aren't covering them.
Also, I'm assuming that a 4 is an A, 3 is a B, 2 is a C, 1 is a D and 0 is an F. |
| OP here again. I also think it is ridiculous to get the report cards after the parent teacher conference. I wish we had this before so I could ask these questions. |
| Actually, if they didn't cover the area then that square is usually blocked out until they do cover it. There actually is a social studies and science curriculum for K. You will want to talk to the teacher again. |

Here is a link to what your K student should be learning in social studies and science.

My daughter was in a DCPS K class last year. She took Social Studies and Science all four quarters.
As a teacher, I don't understand why conferences are scheduled before report cards go out. I usually pull up the grades so that the parents can see them and we can discuss them. Due to paper shortages, I can't print copies for the parents. |

We have been in the system for a long time -- and we still can't figure these things out. My sense is that that it is information overload. I wish the teachers could spend more time teaching and less time filling out these forms.
|
| Schedule another conference with the teacher or send an email. |
| Isn't there a place on the form that explains the 1,2,3? I don't have one accessible, but 1 is approaching standards (where kids typically start at the year), 2 is meets standards, and 4 is exceeds standards? Or something like that. NOT A, B, C, D. That is ridiculous. Your K student did not get a D in anything. |
| My interpretation is a 2 is not quite on grade level, a 3 is on grade level and a 4 is advanced. A 1 is behind grade level. If they haven't introduced the material there should be no grade at all. |
That's correct. OP, were the sub boxes for term 1 in social studies and science filled in with B, D, S, NM or a gray box? |
It explains is on the Report Card. |
|
4 Exceeds grade level expectations
3 Meets grade level expectations 2 Approaches grade level expectations 1 Significantly below grade level You also need to know that these refer to END of grade level expectations, so don't expect 4s at the beginning of the year. |

Do all schools do this differently?
We just got our DCPS K report card and 1 was meets standard, 2 was progressing, 3 was does not meet, 4 was area of concern (or something like that). And it didn't have anything about science or history on it, the boxes were "Counts to 100 by 1s," "Counts to 100 by 2s," "Independently writes lowercase letters," etc. |
This assumption is completely wrong. It's kindergarten, not 12th grade. Teachers are just trying to assess levels of incoming kids (some of which have never attended school before) to see where they need assistance. Stop freaking out. |
