how much to pay babysitter

Anonymous
My husband and I are going out and are having someone he used to work with watch our infant who will be sleeping through our time out. What is the appropriate amount we should give her? She is a friend - we did not ask anything about prices and do not know how much to pay.

I have found in general that for one baby it's roughly $8-10 depending on age (student vs. young professional). We have two and we pay $12 but usually the sitter only deals with our oldest for an hour MAX before he's down for the night.

The only time we've hired a babysitter, we paid $15/hour, but she was a professional nanny. I would guess maybe somewhere in the $10 - $12 range?

In my experience, $10 an hour or the vicinity is a good rate in the DC metro-area. Just round up when you figure out the hours, count the travel time to and from your home (even if you give her a lift) and if she becomes a regular sitter then a holiday bonus or birthday gift (of cash) is appropriate and kind.

Hope that is a help!

Does anyone know of a babysitter in the Arlington area? We have a 5 month old and I would love to be able to go out every once in a while with my friends. My son is asleep by 7 so all they would have to do is sit at my house and maybe put him to bed.

We use 2 sitters, one is $12 and one is $15 an hour. The rate doesn't vary whether it is an evening and the baby is mostly sleeping, or it is during the day. They are in their mid-20s and we live in NW DC.

We pay $20, but we have 3 children. We use our primary caregiver from our child care center. She is in her late 20s, drives, and has a degree in Education. She has done overnight for us as well.

We have a college student and pay her $10.00 / hour for one - regardless of the times.

If you use a "nanny" or someone from your child's daycare, you are going to pay a lot more than you would just a regular babysitter. I think the $8-10 range is very reasonable for a normal babysitter. The lower end for high school students, the upper end for college age. It also depends where you live...the burbs are cheaper.

17:41 Poster, I am a nanny in Arlington. If you would like, email me and maybe we could talk clg_23@yahoo.com! I have great references and have been nannying for 16 years! Thanks!

$14 an hour in G'town if you want a responsible university student.

I've used students for several years, and so have my friends, and the lowest we've ever heard is $12/hour.

IMO if she is a friend then nanny prices are too much. I would think no more than 10 an hour. Talk to her though and ask what shes looking for
