| will he eliminate the program?? i think the first group of eligible people were up for forgiveness in 2017? |
| I hope so |
| Trump is not aware of the existence of such a program. That man never paid for college or owes school loans. You have nothing to worry about. His ignorance works in our favor. |
So people that have been working at lower paying jobs than they could get in the private, for profit sector for YEARS in order to be eligible for loan forgiveness should just be told to kick rocks?
|
| I don't see people who are eligible for cancellation when they entered losing it. But I do think the program might be reformed or eliminated going forward. It was actually criticized by some on the left before so I could see it going away. However I think loan forgiveness/incom based repayment in general is here to stay. Trumps proposed policy is actually more generous in some ways than the current one! It will be very interesting to see how this plays out because student loans are bipartisan in many ways, and the Rs never had a real agenda against the new relief measures. |
| I hope so as well!! |
Really? What do you have against nurses, teachers, social workers? |
I dont believe workers claiming they could make so much more in the private sector. Why don't they and pay off their loans then? |
ummm....you definitely make more in the private sector as opposed to nonprofits etc. How uninformed are you about salaries? That's scary |
It's not only that they could earn more in the public sector. It's that their *chosen profession for which they needed the education* is inherently a public service. Therefore, the loans are forgiven essentially as part of their compensation. Teachers, for example, increasingly need masters degrees that can push debt up way beyond the average 30k. But they generally have low salaries. Do you really think every teacher should say work as a stock broker to safe up 50k before they go to college?? Same thing for people like social workers, nurses in nonprofit hospitals and clinics, public defenders and prosecutors, etc etc. |
Because they have chosen a life of public service? Because they want to do good in this world? Regardless, they were told that if they put in the time in public service, their loans would be forgiven. Going back on that promise now after these people have worked for years believing their loans would be forgiven would be dishonest and immoral. Then again, Trump clearly has no problem refusing to honor promises made to people. |
Because these low paying jobs need people with college degrees to fill them and no one with college loans can afford to take those very important, low paying jobs. Because if everyone just took the highest paying job available, no one would be available to do these very important jobs. |
Then those jobs are either pay to low or are worthless, market forces determine value |
Do you realize that physicians use this program too? My friends are counting on their med school loans being forgiven. I'm pretty sure we can afford to pay off our loans on our salaries. The forgiven amounts should at least be taxes as regular income. Otherwise I'm a freaking fool for paying off my 200k in student loans. |
I guess I missed the massive teacher shortages prior to the loan forgiveness program you're referring to. |
