How can I volunteer to help foster kids/families?

Anonymous
I thought someone here might have ideas. I think I might like to be a foster parent down the line, and have always felt drawn to help foster kids and foster parents, but I don't have any personal connection to that community. I am 30, single and childless and I have worked as a nanny and Newborn Care Specialist for nearly a decade. I'd love to use some of my knowledge and skills to support these kinds of families. Does anyone know of an organization that might be a good fit?

If Howard County isn't your geographic area, reach out to this group still, and see if they can refer you to their counterparts in neighboring counties.

What a wonderful thing to do, OP! You would be an awesome, dream-come-true Respite Care volunteer (someone who takes the foster child for a day or a weekend on a regular basis to provide an opportunity for the foster parent who needs this support). In your area, Northern Virginia Family Service is a nonprofit that has this program. Look on www.nfs.org and click on Foster Care.

Another vote for CASA, if you're willing to commit to a child for at least a year and have at least a couple hours a week to volunteer.
