How is this possible?
Some of the things DC's MA educated teacher sends out have blatant (albeit minor) grammatical errors. How is this possible? I also have a teacher friend who frequently uses "would of" in her writing. Like nails on chalkboard... Why? |
|
It bugs me too. I feel like there is no escape. Even in a great school district, there is always going to be that elem teacher that cannot display there/their/they're correctly.
I'd like to chalk some of it up to typos. I mean, they're going fast and probably not able to re-check a teacher-parent letter. But sometimes you can tell that grammar is tough for them. |
| I see it routinely all over this board, too. Grammar and spelling slip-ups are not unique to teachers. It happens, especially in writing, because when we are typing/writing we are "translating" from the sounds in our head which, in English, often do not match the orthographic pattern we need. There's research on this if you are interested in pursuing the topic. |
Do you have a link or know what this is called? I'd love to read more about the topic. |
| They do not know better. Sad. |
| The misuse of I as an objective pronoun has increased incredibly in the last few years. I have caught it in the WaPo. It is like nails on the board for me as is the "would of" thing. I have a friend with a Masters in Library Science who does the latter - she was educated in Canada which makes it more surprising to me somehow. |

The title should read, "Teachers using poor grammar."
|
| It should be brought to the teacher's attention. After a few times, tell the administration, "we notice this". Teachers should be held to a standard of correct grammar even if others slip up. |
| My DS's K teacher said "he is doing really good in reading" at the PT conference. Ahhhh!!! |
Although I'm not sure that the person who confused 'bad' for 'poor' in this case can be considered a good enough authority on grammar to be making those judgements. Just a perspective from a different poster reading the thread. |
Example? |
. "My husband always brings bagels for he and I from the deli down the street." |
That example also involves misusing he as an objective pronoun. |
Teachers, please begin purposely inserting grammar errors into every email you write to parents, just to make the arms flail here
|
Oh, but that would take away all our fun! |
