| There's a bunch of seventh graders in my DD's middle school who I see hanging out after school, hanging out late in the neighborhood, late late, lots of boy girl socializing and they look like juniors in high school, not 7th graders. Do the most "sophisticated" for lack of a better word, 7th graders get into this behavior this early? I just cannot get over the sharp change from a year and a half ago when they were still in elementary! |
| yes, of course. 7th graders are 13 years old, older if they were redshirted or left back. Some kids that age start doing all sorts of things. But if your kid isn't, that's what's important. |
| Kids were doing that when I was in school 40 years ago! Of course some are. |
| They are 12, not 13, for the most part. And either way it is early. |
| No, most are 13 at some point during the year. Only summer kids are 12. |
| I would assume that some are. I am in my 40s and there were certainly sexually active middle schoolers in my day as well. |
| 7th grade was the sluttyiest time of my life. I personally didn't do drugs but I knew a lot of middle school druggies and the dealers. Thankfully I got through it. All the bad kids from middle school dropped out and never even tried to go to high school. I made new friends and became the squeaky clean person I am today. But back in middle school sex and drugs was all I was around. |
| That's what I was doing in seventh grade which is why I am completely on edge this year because my DD is in seventh. The only good thing was that I got a lot of that out by HS and was much calmer then. |
| Op... wow. I most certainly was not doing any of this innseventh grade so I guess I'm naive. |

Very few 7th graders are involved in sex and drugs... but there are a few.
Very few 8th graders are involved in sex and drugs... but there are a few. 9th grade about 25% of the kids dabble in sex and drugs... IN 12th grade 75% of the kids dabble in sex and drugs... If a kid is regularly drinking in 7th...there are issues. |

I have a childhood friend who admitted to me that her daughter lost her virginity at 12. She went to her mom for birth control about a week after turning 13 and said she was going to have sex one way or the other. My friend took her to the doctor who confirmed she was already sexually active. (Also now that I think of it I have no idea why this didn't turn into a legal matter, but it's a southern state, if that matters.) Anyway, despite that part being curious to me, I can't think of why my friend would tell me her daughter was sexually active so young if it wasn't true.
I have another mom friend who I remember used to complain about constantly having to separate her 7th grader and his girlfriend, like physically separate them. It's on the rarer side but oh yes. It happens. Keep them supervised. |
| I was 11 in 7th grade. |
Why would it turn into a legal matter if a 12yo has sex with another 12yo? And are you insinuating that this behavior is tolerated in the south and not in the north? |
|
I was also 11 in seventh grade.
And yes there were some kids that I knew of that were having sex. I don't know about drinking in 7th, but I do remember hearing things about drugs, sex and alcohol parties in 8th. This was in 1990. I was considered a prude and most people thought I was gay since I wasn't hooking up with boys on the weekend. |

Yes, some 12-year-olds are drinking and trying drugs, but fewer than before.
Here are figures from 2011 (https://www.drugabuse.gov/news-events/news-releases/2011/12/cigarette-alcohol-use-historic-low-among-teens): By 8th grade, 26.9% of kids have used alcohol in the past year (compared to 46.8% in 1994), and 6.4% have binge drinked (down from 8.7% in 2006). 6.1% of kids are smoking (down from 21% in 1996). Smaller numbers are having sex at 12 or 13 (here's a chart--looks like somethings like 5% of boys and 2% of girls have had sex by age 13?): https://www.guttmacher.org/fact-sheet/american-teens-sexual-and-reproductive-health |
