I've followed this forum for a few years now, and while there has always been disagreement about colleges in this forum (some healthy, some not, some ridiculous, some hilarious), unfortunately in the past year, the College and University Discussion forum has been inundated with malicious, provocative threads whose sole purpose is to create discourse. It is not unusual for subject matter to go off course to make a point, and there are great posters who steer comments back to the subject.
The forum is now interjected with race baiting into many threads now, regardless of the subject, and others started solely for that purpose. I am NOT a proponent of censorship but strongly feel this forum is for college discussion with opposing points respectfully argued and while becoming heated at times, for the most part, they are intelligently argued from all educational level of posters. The two or three who find it necessary to respond with profanity, racism, mockery, etc, have popped up in almost every thread posted. I say two or three posters because the style and ideology is consistently the same. You don't need to be Dick Tracy to figure it out. The only way to combat it is to hit the report button and the moderator will determine what is fit. I encourage the true supporters of the purpose of this forum to hit the 'report' button if necessary but not because you disagree that Braggart State University is the be all to end all. |

It is discouraging and hurtful to have your college or worse your kids' colleges mocked on a college board. I let most of it bounce off of me. But I have the benefit of four kids already in or through college. I know how the story plays out. For parents going through the process for the first time, mean-spirited comments are just damaging. I've seen parents come on the board really excited about their child's acceptance only to have their excitement bashed. Why?
I am the poster who went to Ole Miss. Two of our kids also chose Ole Miss. I'm super proud of them! I love Oxford and University if Mississippi. Every time I mention it I am accused of being a racist. I'm not sure why people need to be so ugly. I am hesitant to "report" because I thought that was mostly for really bad stuff. But I do really wish people would think before they post. You are proud of your Ivy kid. I get it. Those of us with kids in state schools are equally as proud. |
| A few minutes ago, I reported a one-word comment with the poster calling another poster a derogatory word for the male anatomy. Enough already! Reported. Gone. |
Jerks will be jerks but the "report" button is not for some someone being ugly but more so for someone being vile. You just hang in their sister like those beautiful magnolias at Ole Miss.

If it was good enough for Nobel laureate William Faulkner........ This is for you, PP, with much respect! Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5py2Ue7LFGY |
It's not all parents that are doing this. There are some college students (and high schoolers) who troll this forum and bash schools they don't like. Notorious are the UMD, VA Tech, and trollers who bash any place that isn't their school. Pride is good. Being a cretin isn't. |
A great post and a timely reminder to us all! Thank you! |

Thank y'all! I really mean that!

| So let's all try not to feed the trolls. |

And hit the report button when needed. They shouldn't be fed nor should they be allowed to decay this forum any more. |
They are making their school and its culture seem very unappealing. |
