New York with 2.5 Year Old

Anonymous
We are thinking of taking the train to NY with our 2.5 year old son the weekend of December 9 for two nights. Is this a crazy idea?

Not at all. Why would it be crazy?

Train is a very nice way to travel with toddlers, since you can walk around on the train. Outbound from DC you'll be at the first stop on the line, so you can sit where you like. Coming back, if it's a busy time (like a Sunday evening), you may have some trouble sitting together (but try the cafe car, sometimes that has seats).

In NY, where will you be staying and how are you planning to get around? Their subway doesn't have elevators, so a stroller isn't the easiest, unless you have something lightweight.

Not crazy at all - we have family there and go at least twice a year. And it's so magical there over the holidays.

Like the PP above save, get a lightweight stroller for subways, buses and taxis because you will definitely be doing a ton of walking regardless and won't want to be without one.

It really depends on your kid's personality, which you know best! For my first child, it would have been a breeze. My second is a couple of months shy of 2.5 and I have no interest in a trip like this with him. He needs a lot of physical activity and time to run around, so I just don't think it would be fun for the rest of the family.

I love NY with kids. And don't forget to plan playground breaks in between more structured activities - there are great playgrounds all over.
