| My 10 month old can't get into a sitting position on his own. He can sit just fine if you put him in that position, and will rotate and reach around and grab at toys and nearly fold himself in half and can pop back up again, but he cannot get into this sitting position o his own. He is only army crawling at this point too. I was walking at this age so I'm a little concerned. |
| My son sat really "late": 9 months. He didn't properly crawl or get himself into sitting until 11 months. He's 16 months and not walking yet but moving around just fine. Dr is not concerned because he is developing, just on the later end. |
| Does anyone have any techniques they can recommend to encourage baby to get into sitting position? Most of the videos I've found on youtube are about helping baby stay upright when sitting, not the actual getting into the sitting position independently. |
| My baby army crawled for what seemed like forever, to the point that I thought he might skip proper crawling altogether, since he was already pulling up and cruising. However, he did finally crawl on hands and knees, around 10.5 months. It was at that point that he really started getting himself into sitting position independently. I bet it will all come in the next few weeks. As for techniques, maybe try to just physically guide him through the movement? Push up on his shoulder lightly while putting his legs in the proper position? |
Did he pull up before sitting? |
Yes, he pulled up before getting into a sitting position independently. He was able to sit when placed before pulling up. |
Thanks, this is encouraging. DS is actively trying to pull up from a sitting position, and while not yet successful, it is making me feel better because at least he is trying. Whereas he is really not trying to sit up independently at all. |
| My DS did it around 10-11 months. Gross milestones have all been late. Pulling on high surfaces (a chair versus a low-surface step) didn't happen until 13.5 months. First steps came at 16.5 months. There was always progression but SLOWER progression. |
This sounds within the normal range to me. But you should talk to your pediatrician about it at your one year visit and see what s/he says. |
10:26 here. Exactly. OP, the one thing you can work on is building core strength because that is what is needed for crawling and sitting. We did baby sit ups and lots of bouncing on an exercise ball (leaning him side to side). My son did not get into a sitting position until he was hands and knees crawling. It all happened really fast though: he pushed up on his hands and knees, got into sitting, crawled, pulled up, and cruised within a couple weeks of each other. |
| Hi. My baby who just turned 10 months only started doing this last week. She still doesn't pull up or crawl (in the proper position). Pediatrician isn't worried yet. |
Thanks for sharing this. Did your pediatrician say when they would start to get worried? |
| My DS got into a sitting position on his own at 10 months and started regular crawling (as opposed to army crawling) about a week later. He is very active and seems really normal to me. He's not walking at 1 year, but many kids are not. |

I'd talk to your ped and possibly get an EI appt.
As far as advice right now, stop sticking him in a seated position unless necessary like high chair or whatever. He needs to build strength with crawling and pushing up on his own. It actually can be damaging to put them in positions they are not strong enough to really be in. I'd do lots and lots of floor time. |
Thanks, I'll try this. |
