Preganancy Confirmation after Miscarriage and Annual Exam

Anonymous
With my first pregnancy, I went to the doctor for confirmation at about 8 weeks. At the time, that seemed late. But with my second pregnancy (that ended in miscarriage), I went in around 5 or 6 weeks and had to go back again because they couldn't get a good measurement and, in hindsight, something was wrong. So, I don't know when to make an appointment this time - I am wary of going too early. And as a follow up, I haven't had an annual in a while because when I called for the last pregnancy confirmation I had an annual scheduled and they replaced it with a pregnancy confirmation appointment. I am now scheduled for my annual at the beginning of August. Do they do an annual when you are early in pregnancy? TIA.

You can have an annual early in pregnancy. I had my first prenatal appointment at 8 weeks and I was overdue for a pap smear, so the doctor gave it to me during that 8 week appointment.

My drs office likes to see you at 8 weeks. If you already have an appt scheduled for around that time, just call the office and tell them that you think you are pregnant and would like to know if they can tag your appt accordingly.

I can't remmeber when they do a pap smear - but I think they do it as a part of early pregnancy appts (?)

Congratulations!

If I recall correctly my Dr. did do a pap smear at my first pregnancy appt. which was around 7 or 8 weeks.

My first prenatal appt was about 4 months after my annual, and the OB said that no pap is necessary. They don't do it unless it's been close to a year since your last one.

OP, in answer to your question, my OB's office doesn't normally schedule the first prenatal appt earlier than 8 weeks, but I do wonder if in your case, with your history, they would want to see you earlier.

I had two miscarriages (1st at 8w, 2nd at 9w). When I became pregnant with my third, I was seen at 5w and received my first U/S at 7w, due to my history and my own need for peace of mind. If you want to wait, wait. If you want to go earlier, by all means, do so. You can have consecutive hcg quantitative blood tests, so that you can see how things are progressing early on. In my case, I decided I wanted to be prepared if a miscarriage was likely to happen, so I went early. It was actually a difficult decision, and I considered waiting, but impatience won out.

Happily, I'm now approaching my third trimester and have had a great pregnancy. Good luck to you!

BTW...I was a few months overdue for my Pap and received one at my first 5w OB appt.

I also had a miscarriage history and so went in a 7 weeks for an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy on this one. 7 weeks is the best time to 'date' the baby, which as you know from last time, can signal problems or the lack of them. It's great for peace of mind if the embryo age is indeed what is expected.

With my three pregnancies my doctor did not see me until week 8. However number three ended in miscarriage at 10 weeks. When I became pregnant again my doctor saw me as soon as I called her to let her know I had tested positive at home and for my piece of mind she monitored me closely, including early U/S. I truly appreciated her kindness in doing so. I am now 18 weeks and thank God, everything is going fine.
Tons of luck!
