Puerto Rico Itinerary

Sorry, wanted to break off from the other PR thread.
I'll be there for a week in December with a 7 and a 9 year old.
We were thinking of a staying at Contado, Fajardo, and Ponce for a few nights each, and touring is our priority over beaches, although we'll certainly spend some time on the water.
Anything that we shouldn't miss? Any hotel your really like?
Obviously, we'll do the Old City, the national park, etc.
thanks

I would schedule in lots of beach time, honestly, with 7 and 9 year old kids. Why the hyper itinerary - sounds like more of an adult-focused trip. Maybe go to El Yunque rain forest and swim under the waterfall or go to one of the offshore islands.

The kids will love the bio bay in Fajardo. If you want to consider an overnight in Vieques, Mosquito Bay is an even better bio bay. El Yunque is fun too.

Casa Cortes chocobar in SJ is a must!

The art museum in Ponce is lovely -- think t was built by the same architect who built the MOMA, but not too large for that age children.

PR is such a dump. Made the mistake of going there once. Never again. The biobay was cool but not worth all the other hassles. Once you leave SJ it's basically a third world country.

We spent our honeymoon at the W in Vieques. It was glorious and beautiful. I absolutely recommend an overnight in Vieques.

Are you worried about zika?

Also, while you're staying in Fajardo, you can fly out of the airport there to Culebra for a quick day trip at Flamenco Beach. It definitely has very humble amenities, but kids don't care and the beach itself is gorgeous.

Agreed it is a beautiful beach and I kind of liked the amenities. Not overrun but you can get margaritas on the pristine beach. Definitely the best beach at Culebra.

Here's what to do. The best time to see Puerto Rico and feel it is at Christmas time. If staying in the Condado, stay at the Marriott or the Vanderbilt hotel. There are lots of great restaurants that are kid friendly in the Condado...which is a taxi ride away from Old San Juan. There are also a lot of great activities there. Such as paddle boarding in the Condado lagoon (with resident manatees), surf lessons for kids, playing in the park near the Marriott (at Christmas time it is lit up with Christmas lights) it's across from the Stella Maris church which is under construction. The best restaurants in the Condado are Via Apia, Danny's International pizza, Ola restaurant for brunch at the Vanderbilt Hotel (awesome food and scenery). Pikayo, Cocina Abierta are wonderful too. For a kid free night out go to Old SAN Juan and book a reservation at Marmalade restaurant. No kids allowed. It is an amazing experience. Santaella restaurant is also great.

From Condado you can also day trip to El Yunque rainforest and hike La Mina falls (short hike), or take the two hour hike up El Yunque to see the spectacular views or the Atlantic, etc. make sure to stop at some of the kiosks on the side of the road to taste some delicious local fare like fritters and coconut water served in real coconuts.

In the Condado area you are also close to the Museum of Modern Art which is spectacular plus it has a kids section. Also Old SAN Juan has a Kids's museum.

In Old SAN JUan you will want to buy kites and fly them with the kids at El Moro either before or after you see the fort. It's a fun thing for kids to do and a tradition. Buy piraguas or the local snow cones afterwards for a great treat! Shopping is fantastic in Old San Juan and you will be amazed especially at night if you walk down Paseo de la Princess all the music and color and artisans and people having a great time there singing and dancing. Like I said Christmas time in Puerto Rico is second to none. It's a lively, joyful experience.

Ponce I would skip unless you want to go to go visit Caja de Muertos island.

Rincon is a great place for families and surfing if you want to venture out west. In Isabella try going horse bam riding at Tropical Trail Rides. Go see as well the new Cueva Ventana, a cave you hike into and at the end opens up to a spectacular river scene and country side below...try geocaching around that spot.

In Fajardo, stay at El Conquistador hotel in the Las Casitas section. Visit the seaside water park and spend he day sailing and visiting Palomino and Icacos islands. The kids will love it. Erin go Braugh sailing charters are great. Visit the bioluminescent bay and kayak through it. Not the brightest but, it is still an adventure.

Oh and if you are adventurous enough, try going to the longest zip line in the world in Toro Negro, it was amazing..and go to SAN Sebastian area to visit the most beautiful waterfall you can swim in and jump from called Gozalandia!!!

Have fun! We always have a great time with our kids in PR. You just have to know where to go. We will be there this Christmas too. Have a blast!

Looking at the same type of vacation, but we're only going to be there for five night. Does it make sense to stay in San Juan the whole time, and take day trips to everything?
