Azores - have you been?

Anonymous
Eyeing this for this year. I know where it is and have read a bit about it. But, has anyone been there? What are the reviews/thoughts on it as a vacation spot? I don't know anyone who has been there.

Thanks!

No one here, either?

DH and I went there in 2008 as part of our two week honeymoon. We started in Spain, then Portugal and the Azores and then finished with a cruise back home across the Atlantic. The Azores are interesting and beautiful but I think going there as part of a bigger trip is a better idea than having it as the only destination. It was nice and the landscape was beautiful and interesting but it was definitely not the most memorable place of our trip.
What are you looking for?

I looked into it when there were some airfare sales. I was really unimpressed by the hotels, but maybe I only saw the ones on one specific island.

We went to San Miguel & stayed at the Furnas Boutique Hotel in late March, earlier this year. It's a great hotel & restaurant. They have a gorgeous indoor pool heated by the hot springs there. The island is very lush & green & is said to have more cows than people. We did some hikes and drives. Whale/dolphin watching excursions are big & San Miguel gets a lot of cetacean traffic. Very fresh seafood. Found Ponta delgada a bit run down and sad, but we were there off season. We flew in from Lisbon for 4 days with a 1h time difference and it was about the right amount of time.
