Paraben/Pthalate free?

Anonymous
I have had enough of all the paraben/pthalate free makeup -- I have just read too much scary info. on the Internet. Does anyone have any safe(r) makeup recs? I just recently started using Caudelie moisturizer, and it is ok, not great.

OP here: meant to say I have had enough of all the paraben/pthalate FULL makeup.

i've been on this bandwagon for a while. i buy most of my stuff at WF. i've found that makeup is the hardest to find a non-toxic substitute for. shampoo/conditioner and moisturizer i've converted. but i still wear toxic mascara and foundation from estee lauder companies.

body moisturizer: kiss my face olive and aloe
face moisturizer: zia
shampoo/conditioner: john masters organics, giovanni, and some lush products
sunscreen: california baby
lip balm and color: burts

Same here - I use a lot of these products but am unwilling to give up my toxic mascara! I also have not found a good shampoo and conditioner but will give these a try. Alba is another more natural company that makes good skin products.

My take: substitute where you can, and try to minimize these products in your life. But don't expect to go totally toxic-free (well, at least don't expect to without a major hassle).

I clean my house with white vinegar and other natural products, and have starting using better dishwasher detergent and not using dryer sheets. I have replaced things like face wash, moisterizer, sunscreen, lip balm etc. but have not replaced every personal product. I buy a lot more organic produce and organic milk and eggs.

So I try to fit it in as much as possible but haven't completely changed everything.

There's a lot of stuff out there that's inexpensive. I use:

- moisturizer by Earth Science
- sunblock by Neutrogena Sensitive Skin
- makeup by Physicians Formula Organic Wear (though I don't really wear a lot of makeup)
- body lotion by Jergens Naturals
- shampoo/conditioner by Aveda (Suave and Pantene also offer paraben-free products)

I tried to use "safer" detergents, etc., but I didn't feel like they cleaned my clothes or household surfaces well enough.

I'm trying to move over to parabn/pthalate-free products too, and found EWG's Skin Deep database to be helpful in at least determining how "bad" my current products are: http://cosmeticsdatabase.com/index.php?nothanks=1
It helps me figure out what I should focus on replacing vs. what I am ok keeping conventional (e.g., the Boots lip gloss I got from Target is ok, the Aveeno moisturizer is not).

I do a lot of my shopping niw at Whole Foods and My Organic Market, though Wegman's also has a nice natural mini store in the center of their Fairfax store with lotsof natural products...

I tried using that database, but only found it moderately helpful., Most "natural" products had data gaps of 80-100% (meaning they hadn't been tested for toxicity), and they usually rated products with "fragrance" higher than those with parabens. I gave up!

I like to use all-natural and organic products, most of which I use per recommendation from thecheekypeach.com. There are a lot of great reviews, tips, and lists of good companies (under the B2B). I would check that out and some other organic sites to see which products are best.
