How to teach my six year old to stop being such a follower?

My son tries so hard to fit in with other kids even when they are doing things he knows he isn't supposed to do. I have tried to talk to him about how it's important to do what he knows is right even if others are doing something different, but it doesn't seem to sink in at all. Is there any way to teach a kid to not be a follower?
