| First time doing IVF and we just started the PIO injections. We've only done it twice but each time within a few hours my butt starts to hurt where the injection was. It doesn't help that the side we did the first injection was still hurting when we did the second, so now I'm just in extreme pain on both sides. I feel like I got beat up b/c it hurts to sit, stand, lay down even almost 24 hours after the shot. I normally have a high threshold for these sorts of things so I'm not sure what to make of this. Have others felt this way? Is this normal? Is my husband injecting it incorrectly? What can I do to alleviate the pain? I don't remember seeing anything like this on other postings or websites and I can't imagine having to do this for the next couple of weeks. Thanks for any advice you can provide. |
| Heat before and ice after really helped me. |
| Very normal. Sounds like different things work for different people. For me, I realized a week in that ice before was making it much worse with soreness later. Heat after made it worse too. Only thing that really worked was moving around for a while after. Even with that, it was still pretty rough. Its the only silver lining of getting a BFN- being able to stop the shots. |
| What finally helped with me - we discovered this the last week or two -- was to make skin really taut and then inject. Still hurt, but it helped. My baby is 7 months and I can still feel sometimes where the shots went in. Ugh. |
| Not looking forward to this! I start the process in two weeks |

One thing that seemed to make a difference for me was getting the PIO to body temperature before injecting it. I just drew up the dose, then held the (capped!) syringe in my closed fist for 10-15 minutes before having my husband inject it.
I'd totally forgotten about that trick until I started getting very sore from the PIO shots this time, and was wondering why I didn't remember having any significant trouble at all with them in my last pregnancy. As soon as I started warming up the oil first again, I noticed much less soreness. (Just occasionally when my husband's aim was less than true.) They definitely are less painful than Lovenox, at any rate! |
I haven't done it yet but a colleague recommended this to me |
| One thing that has helped me.... my nurse requested a slightly shorter needle because I have a very low BMI. |
Do you mind sharing what your BMI is? Is it lower than 20? Mine is in the normal range. |

We realized we were injecting in a less optimal place-painwise. It is best to go in upper outer quadrant but be well above the top of the butt crack. You are still in glute muscle but not where you sit. This was the video we used:

| Warming the oil helps quite a bit because it is so thick. |
