To make a bike path that’s perfectly adequate. I’ll donate to that plan. With one proviso: an internet camera so we can all watch how many bikes use it and there’s no dispute. The Connecticut sidewalks are wider than anything in Amsterdam, Geneva, Berlin where they easily fit two.

This! Ward 3 is the least bike friendly ward in the city, and Connecticut Avenue is the least bike friendly corridor in Ward 3. Throwing all your financial and political capital into this project is a losing proposition. Ward 3 wants Connecticut Ave to be a traffic sewer. The city should focus its efforts on more fertile ground.

Ward 3 residents and others get to enjoy them, and the point is that there is bike infrastructure in upper Northwest, including paths that connect directly to a regional network of trails. That's why the "need" to take away two travel lanes on Connecticut Avenue for more bike lanes is a big head-scratcher.


Sure, Ward 3 residents can "enjoy" bike trails in Rock Creek Park, but they aren't actually that helpful in terms of getting around Ward 3 or to most of downtown. If the main reason people wanted bike lanes on Connecticut was just to ride around recreationally, yes, the presence of the park would seem to moot that. But telling me to ride into Rock Creek Park to get to my office several miles east of Georgetown is like telling Maryland commuters to drive to Virginia on their way to downtown D.C. And the park doesn't make it any easier to run errands in Cleveland Park on a bike, either.

For something, more drivers are driving around drunk or smoking weed than before the pandemic. And thanks to DC’s criminal justice “reforms” MPD basically doesn’t do traffic stops anymore.


There is no such thing as safe speeding. If drivers obey speed limits, crashes don't result in people being killed or seriously injured. Intoxication may explain why people speeding and driving erratically, but these efforts to deflect from the fact that speeding is generally a necessary condition in fatal or otherwise serious accidents are both silly and tiresome.

I bike and am part of the “biking community.” I see crunchy moms, hipster dads, lots of kids, Congressional staffers on scooters, delivery people, athletic middle-aged women, of all races. “MAMIL” is a made-up trope. The only place you see bikers decked out in lycra in large numbers are places like Hanes Point where people are specifically training for races, and the genders and races are very mixed. In fact compared to most outdoor activities in DC biking seems to be notably mixed race.
