I've seen a lot of Sewanee threads on DCUM recently. What type of kid attends and thrives at Sewanee? What other schools do kids who apply to Sewanee apply to? |
Rich |
white |
Southern fried |
This has been covered. The kid who can't get in to a better school. That. That is the type. |
Well, aren't you savvy? I have no ties to Sewanee, but, I'm just tired of this kind of mean-spirited, shallow comment on this forum. |
Sewanee has been discovered. The head of Sewanee is the former head of Middlebury. Things are happening there. |
I know a lot of Sewanee grads, recent and older. The southern traditions are still in place, but it is progressive in its thinking on social issues. More and more, the student composition includes those from the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. It is a strong SLAC in the mold of a NESCAC school, but without the permafrost and the requisite frosty dispositions. There is a strong private school connection for admittees, but the public school percentages are increasing. It is a warm place where long term friendships are made. |
One of my clients -- an NGO in the education field -- had a very bright, capable intern from Sewanee last summer. Her position was grant-funded, though my sense was that she came from an UMC background (attended an independent secondary school in a smallish Southern city). She was a little on the preppy-crunchy side, but also savvy in a fresh, unjaded way. Her post-grad plans are to teach, possibly with TFA or another similar organization, then go to grad school in education. She would have fit right in at my NESCAC alma mater. |
Paleo, did you make it ED? |
I agree with this, but for SURE the kids there are very very rich, and very white. |
I ended up applying ED 2 so Sewanee could see my 1st semester grades from this year. My 1st semester grades are better than in previous years, so I think that'll help. Also had pretty strong midterm scores in most subjects( got a mediocre science grade) I really hope I get in because Sewanee is my top choice. I'm nervously awaiting the decision just like everyone else. Do you think being a full-pay applicant will help me in ED admission? |
It gets several kids from Episcopal each year. |
Creative Writing and Theology are the two big majors there.
And it is very isolated in the south-central part of Tennessee. Can't see it myself. |
It is affiliated with the Episcopal church. |
