Expectant and Postpartum Moms
I had a c/s a month ago today. While I KNOW that just because I am feeling great I shouldn't push it, I SO want to do some light exercise! My OB said to wait for the 6 week appointment but I just wondered if anyone did anything before that....light weights for the upper body, medium paced walking? Anything?!
I didn't do any weights or anything like that, although I was really anxious too! I did do medium paced walking pushing my baby in the stroller which was pretty good exercise and I assumed was ok. I really think it's better to wait until you get the all clear from you doctor even if you feel good. After my six week appointment, I went back to running and lifting weights. It did take a few months before I could comfortably do sit-ups or any abdominal exercises.
Maybe I shouldn't have, and I don't want to encourage it, but I started moderate paced walking at about 2 weeks. I did my first regular workout (including light running, squats, lunges, etc) at 5 week post-partum. I WAS cleared at 2 weeks for moderate walking, though. At my 6 week appt my doctor noted that she could tell I had done some ab work. Didn't scold me though.
I walked a lot. I would not do much more. It is not worth risking a pelvic floor injury that you could deal with for life.
I would wait. I am sure you are prob anxious to get back to yourself again (I was) the time will pass quickly enough!
My incision started opening up about 3 weeks post c section because I was overdoing it....I didn't even realize until I went in for my incision check. I took it easy after that and it closed up again (I was all sewn up inside, it was just the outside was opening). Regardless, I'd really recommend waiting another couple of week.
My doctor cleared me for exercise 4 weeks post c-section. I took it easy in the beginning--about 35 minutes on the cross-trainer a couple of times a week. About 2 months post c-section I started running again (again, taking it easy...slower and not as long as I used to run). I also started doing some light weight at around 8 weeks or so. I think the key is to know when to stop--if you feel any discomfort, don't push yourself.
