My kid's listening to music with bad lyrics

Anonymous
He's 12 yo. Cake by the Ocean is the song he was playing and let his 4 yo sister listen to it too. Now she says she likes it too. She has no idea what the lyrics mean. I don't want him, let alone her, listening to lyrics with profanity. What can I do to teach him values so that he won't listen to these kind of songs? Is it my job to go through the list of songs on his iPod and make sure they're "clean"? He says he learned of this song from his friend's younger sister who is 8!

Ugh... No answers but my 11 year old likes that song too. We don't even listen to the radio very much but the kids all know it at school.

Chill. Do you remember all the songs you listened to when you were a kid? Did you have a clue what they meant? I remember listening to "Afternoon Delight" when I was a little kid. I didn't have a clue and I wasn't scarred by hearing those lyrics. You said your kids don't know what the lyrics mean. You can set the permissions for what they can listen to or download for more age appropriate or radio versions of songs. That's what I've done for my kids who listen to Pandora.

Agree with this. I was 15 listening to Little Red Corvette, thinking it was about a woman driving a car. Lol

I have values. I listened to (and still listen to) songs with profanity and/or violence. Listening to, liking and even singing along to songs will not turn someone into a bad person.

Me, too on the Little Red Corvette. When I heard it as an adult I figured out he wasn't talking about horses when he mentioned Trojans! And we all sang "Like a virgin" and had no clue what a virgin was. We all turned out to be fine, upstanding citizens.

My 6 and 8 year olds love Hamilton. Bastard, whore, suicide, $hit-storm. All those words now in their vocabulary thanks to me...luckily only the 8 year old asks what they mean and I don't think they got the last one enough to sing it right.

Bowie's "Sufragette City" with Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am - sang it over and over, with no idea of the meaning. My poor parents.

Thanks OP. My kids and I laughed about this song on a long road trip this summer --- we were trying to figure out the lyrics in the first place. Had no idea it meant anything other than cake by the ocean until this thread prompted me to google. I can assure you that my 7yo and 12yo have even less idea. Oh well.
