Federal vacancy cancelled after interviews

I went through two rounds of interviews for a Federal vacancy and received notice today, two months after my final interview, that the vacancy had been cancelled. Why would this happen? Did they just not like any of the candidates enough? It can't be to avoid hiring a veteran, since veteran's preference would not apply given that the position was in the excepted service.

My DH experienced this on both sides. As an interviewee, he was told the funding was lost. Same deal when he was doing the hiring.

No funding under the continuing resolution. Keep your eye out, maybe it will reopen under the next CR or when they finally pass the budget (late winter/early spring).

Another possibility is that the money was originally there in FY16, but now that we've crossed into a new fiscal year, some agencies are finally getting their estimated budgets for the year (pending CRs and actual passed budgets). If the agency has a lower operating budget in FY17 than they originally estimated a few months ago, then they may find that they have to cut spending on certain organizations and a position may have been cut.

Unfortunately, having just crossed into a new fiscal year, this is not unusual.

They still have to give priority to people on the PP list in DCIPS.

Keep an eye out for a re-listing. You might also reach out to one of the people you interviewed with - can't hurt if done gently/diplomatically.

Best guess is that it is a straight money issue.
