Reps & sex vs Dems & taxes

Anonymous
I have seen several comments in various blogs about the fact that more is made of the hypocrisy of people from the "family-values" party having affairs than about the hypocrisy of people from the "tax-raising" party failing to pay their taxes. I don't see the parallel, since it's not the party's policies that leads people to see Sanford, Ensign, Vitter, and Craig as hypocrites, but their own preaching. The only Democrat whose behavior really contradicted his own public persona was Spitzer, and he felt he had to resign. I don't defend tax-dodging, but am I wrong that not one of the tax-dodging Democrats ran on a "pay your taxes" platform?

Just to clarify, Spitzer was engaged in a felony - prostitution. He was caught in a sting operation, and there was plenty of evidence. He was the governor of NY at the time. He HAD to resign. He was about to be impeached.

He didn't just feel like he had to resign. And he's back now, bigger than ever. Every time I turn on the television, I see him.

The other thing about Spitzer is that he was the attorney general for so long and loved to go after minor (and sometimes major) white collar crime. When he sued Richard Grasso, people thought he was way way out of line. People in NY HATED him. So the irony there was quite obvious.

The others are hypocrites too, particularly given their party platform, but I just want to clarify that Spitzer wasn't some somewhat innocent person who had to resign - he's always been a weasel.

Oh, lastly, while he was suing Grasso, he himself was paying $80,000 for prostitutes - the FBI opened the investigation b/c of large money transfers. They thought he was being bribed or laundering money.

The Dems also find themselves with their pants on their ankles - Clinton and John Edwards come to mind.

PP, I have contempt for those two men but I think the point is that they were less likely to play the family values card than conservative Republicans.

While I agree that it's even more hypocritical when people are touting their family values BS, I think that Edwards in particular seemed to use his happy family charade for political purposes.

Edwards, additionally, scores high on the despicable charts because he had the gall to run for president knowing that his affair could blow the whole thing to hell. Totally unfair to his followers.

But I think the thing that rankles about those Republican reprobates is not so much their peccadillos as their preaching. It is the twisted logic of "defending" marriage by barring committed couples while destroying their own marriages. The injury they do to gay couples is intensified by the insult that their own behavior adds.

This is it, exactly, and I'm a straight, married 40ish lady.
