How to position rug

I have an open floor plan living room / dining room / kitchen. For the living room (which has a big bay window), I have the couch on a diagonal effectively creating the back "wall" (on a slant) of a rectangle living room.

Should the rug also be on the same diagonal? Do I position it so that is square with the room or squared off the sofa?

OP here - nope, no rug currently! Would I have it go under some of the furniture or just the coffee table? The room definitely isn't big enough to have a large circular rug that encompasses all the furniture.

OP here - also one edge is a big window seat set up with lots of cushions if that changes the answer at all
