Just curious. I just started a job where I get 6 wks of paid time off (sick leave and vacation days combined). I've never worked somewhere that offers so much leave - just wondering what is a "normal" amount of vacation time to take. I'm not really counting days taken because DC is sick or you need back-up daycare or school is closed for one day, but real, honest vacation days. |
3 week paid vac and 5 day sick leave |
I take all of my 3 weeks and could easily take 6 weeks vacay! I'm not one of those people who stockpile vacay time. |
I get 30 days vacation leave... but I am now working abroad. When I worked for a private US company I got 10 days (yikes) and when I worked for an international organization based in DC I got 30 days (yippee!). None of this includes sick leave. |
5 weeks vacation plus 2 weeks sick leave and 7 days family leave. Also all public holidays and every other Friday off. |
13:13 here - I forgot to say, I generally take about 25 days of vacation. |
I also get 30 days of PTO a year.
For me: 5 days kid sickness, 5 days Fridays off just because, 15 days true vacations (3 one week vacations), and 5 days to cover week with no child care between camp and school. |

I actually have 43 paid days off annually. I negotiated this when my company started running out of money to pay me as much as I could make somewhere else. I use most of them sometimes don't use some, and that's fine - it's great to know that they're there and I've never worried about not having time to take when I needed it, or cming to work sick to be sure I had enough vacation, etc. This year i'm taking a full maternity leave and will be using every last day. And then taking some time off the books over Christmas, which my boss has already approved. |
I get 5 weeks and use most of it. always take a week at xmas, kids spring break and 2 weeks in the summer. the rest comes in days here or there. On the flip side i work well over a 40 hour week most of the time so don't feel too guilty about taking time off. |
I have the same as you, OP, but so far most of it goes to sick days with DC when he's home from day care. So I haven't taken a real vacation yet for two years.
I'd follow the "culture" of your particular workplace. For example, my last job allowed all of us to accumulate about a month's worth of compensatory time during a particular busy season. Much of the rest of the year was slow, so many people took up to two months off here and there (not all at once). At my current job, there's a 6 week down-time where some people take almost that whole 6 weeks. (They are senior folks with tons of leave). Most newbies like me take about two weeks off each year. |
12 weeks! What do you do? Don't also tell me you earn $500k on top of that! Wow. |
Teacher? |
I now get 5 weeks (4 weeks before this year). I generally use all my time since we can only bank 1 week's worth and even then it needs used up by 1/2 way through the following year. (Our vacation accrues annually not week by week.) We also get 2 personal days and federal holidays. I think it's a good policy not to allow banking of vacation time since everyone needs to recharge regularly. |
I get 19 days for vacation, plus 15 sick days. I usually take all of my vacation plus a few days unpaid if need be. My office is very encouraging of vacation and my boss always takes hers and goes on unpaid also, so she sets a good example. |
