UTI

My doctors office just called to say that I have a UTI and now I am worried because I gave my urine sample a week ago and they are just now getting me my test results. I assume that the infection has gotten worse. I've been prescribed Keflex (an antibiotic) twice a day for 7 days. Has anyone else had a UTI during pregnancy? I really have had no noticeable symptoms other than having to urinate a lot, which I just chalked up to being pregnant. Anyone else had a UTI and have you had any complications? Also, what if it has spread to my kidney? Does anyone have experience with kidney infections and pregnancy? I am 28 weeks along and I am due an appointment next week, so hopefully by next Thursday and the course of antibiotics everything will be back to normal, I just wish they had got me the results sooner. Sorry for rambling I am just mad!

its very common during pregnancy. i had about 5 uti's with my first. antiobiotics are important as untreated UTI's can cause preterm labor I treated each one and had no problems. I also did not have symptoms and would not have known had the OB not tested me.

also - it can take time to grow a culture to get the exact bacterial strain so the right rx is used., a week is a bit long but not unheard of.

Oh, you would know if it spread to your kidney. That happened to me, and I was barfing and it was like peeing razorblades. Trust me, you'd know.

If you don't have any symptoms, it must be a weak UTI (and you might have already beaten it with just your immune system). Definitely treat it, but I doubt you or the baby are at significant risk.

I think a week is a bit long to wait on a UTI result because like you stated, these infections move at a huge progressive pace & there is a chance of your kidneys being affected.

Definitely bring this up at your next appointment.

Actually pregnant women do not feel the harsh symptoms of a bladder infection for some reason so that doesn't mean that the infection is "weak."

+1

The test isn't like putting a drop on a test strip and knowing the answer. It can take some time to complete.

I had some awful UTIs which turned out to be related to kidney stones. The stones weren't passing which caused repeated UTIs. You will know if it's a stone though. I thought I was having a miscarriage or my appendix burst.
