Do you have one? Are you happy about it? Are you concerned about home security with it? Does in let bugs, etc. in and HVAC air out? Are you worried about your dog escaping?
We recently adopted a 1 yo lab and we have a big fenced in yard. Lots of people I've mentioned the new dog to have said they installed a dog door and they love it. I can see the upside to letting my pup have free access to the yard all day, but I also see some big downsides - the biggest of which being that any door big enough for my 65 pound dog is big enough for other types of intruders too. |
| We've had one for five years and love it. Lets the dog out to our fenced gated yard. None of the above problems. If you don't have a fenced yard I would never do it, OP. |
| Our lab would bang on the door with his paw when he wanted to go out or in. We didn't have a dog door. |
| We are also contemplating one. We do keep Nest cams on our doors already, which can record footage and alert you if there is activity at the door. |

Dog doors for the win. I don't leave my dog alone home for super long hours, but knowing he can get in and out in case makes me feel better. Not just to pee, but also in the unlikely case of a fire.
I have never worried about anyone or anything else coming through it. Maybe that makes me naive, but I also know my dog would make someone or something trying to come through that doc, other than himself, pretty miserable! |
| There are electronic ones that have a sensor for the collar. When the dog comes close, it opens. When the dog goes through it closes. Better security I suppose. |

One thing to keep in mind.....
If your dog is a “hunter,” a dog door would allow your dog to bring in his/her “kill.” We have neighbors who have a dog door. They spent a good part of one morning trying to capture a live bunny brought in by the dog through the dog door. Just something to consider...... |

Our neighbors have one and thier dog was outside barking so often that another neighbor called the cops (dog barked incessantly all night long).
