HSG test

Anonymous
Is there any reason I won't be able to go back to work after the HSG test? Will I be in too much pain? Do I need someone to pick me up, or will I be able to get myself home?
Thank you!

I think everyone reacts differently. I was completely fine during the exam, then afterwards sort of got light-headed and almost passed out trying to put my clothes on. Had to stay on the gurney then for 30 minutes until I was better. DH took me home where I rested, but really felt ok. I would make an appointment as late as you can if you are thinking you might miss work.

I was able to walk out of the test and drive myself home. I continued with normal activities the rest of the day. The actual test takes 30 seconds and I found it painful, but the pain stopped as soon as the test was over. I think it depends on how sensitive you are. I was surprised that I was fine both times I've had an HSG because I am usually sensitive.

I've had 2, and both times I'd definitely be able to drive myself home and function just fine after. The first one was pretty crampy/painful in the 2 minutes of the test, and then immediately fine after. The second wasn't even painful during the test. Best of luck.

I wwas able to drive myself home but I was far more effected than I thought I would be - it was pretty uncomfortable.

It really varies from woman to woman. I was extremely uncomfortable. My husband drove me home and I crawled into bed for a couple of hours. After that I was fine. I didn't have any blockage, but I have stage IV endometriosis which I think contributed to the pain for me.

I had 2 and drove myself both times, no problem. I did take some Advil in advance.

I had a lot of pain with mine (despite taking valium and advil prior to it)-- there is no way I could have gone back to work.

I took a bunch of Advil (I think four pills) and was fine to go back to work. It was pretty uncomfortable during the procedure and I had a little cramping on and off for the rest of the day, but nothing too serious.

I was able to drive myself home with no problems and continue with my day. I agree with posts that recommend you take Advil/Tylenol etc before the procedure. I would describe the procedure more as "uncomfortable" and less as "painful." Honestly, I've had pap smears and dental appointments that were worse than my HSG test. It literally takes 30 seconds to complete. And to top it all off, they had the worst time catheterizing me because I am small "down there" and I still did not find the experience to be painful or require me to rest afterward. If you make the appointment late in the day, you can plan to just leave work early and go home after your appointment if you are worried about how you might feel after the test. Don't stress, this is the easiest part of this insane fertility journey! (That hopefully you won't have to go on) Good luck!

For me it was without a doubt the most painful, worst part of my fertility journey--and we did everything from clomid to IVF. The pain level with HSGs vary greatly, for some people it is easy and they barely notice it. For others, like me, it is really bad. But, all of us got through it and that is the important thing to remember.

OP here. Thank you; this is really helpful. I have my fingers crossed--I really HAVE to go back to work, so I'll take advil and hope for the best.

Seriously, if you think the HSG was the most "painful" part of your fertility journey, then you should forget about having kids because child birth is SO MUCH more painful/intense...both physically and emotionally. Epidural (or natural birth)...C-section, don't get me started. OP...do not let this poster scare you...the test is not that bad (just try and relax on the table) and you will be able to go back to work with no problems...just take the Advil and try to take it easy when back at work....maybe order out for dinner when you get home. But you will be fine.

The first poster was refering to her fertility journey, not birth. She was not comparing it to birth. I have been through the whole fertility journey as well as giving birth three times (including epidural, c-section, and au natural). I would agree that for me, the HSG was the most painful thing along my fertility journey (which I think the PP is defining as the journey to get pregnant). For me it was more painful than any of the IVF shots or the egg retrieval. It isn't that way for some women, but that is how it was for me. We are not trying to scare the OP, but we are trying to let her know that there is a chance that she may not feel up to returning to work following the HSG. As the PP said, she got through it and that is the most important thing to remember.

Well dude, I guess I just had a "different" kind of HSG test...I seriously don't understand where all this pain and drama is coming from. Oh well...I'm really tough and try not to dramatize everything in my life so maybe my experiences are well...mine. And I completely understood what the poster was trying to say...you are the one who missed my point. What I was said was that if you think the HSG test is the most painful part of your "fertility journey" then you should stop your journey there because the road that you continue on to have a baby only gets worse.
