Ebay or consignment?

Anonymous
I have lost some weight and have dropped 3 sizes. Now I realize I need to almost completely replace my wardrobe. I'd like to sell some of my current clothes to help defer the cost. I am trying to decide between posting stuff on Ebay or just taking it to a consignment shop. Anyone have any advice? If consignment is the way to go, are there any good shops in the Bethesda area?

well, i'm not sure which is better, but I've sold stuff at the Mustard Seed in Bethesda (trendy and hard to get a slot now to sell) and Ebay. I think you have the potential to make more money on Ebay, but I hate running to the post office all the time. I just have so little time though.

My sister sells a ton of her stuff on EBay and does pretty well. If you use Auctiva to manage your auctions you can set them to start and end when it's convenient for you. That said, I've never been motivated enough to sell on EBay but I have consigned some things at Sunflowers in Kensington - check it out - it's in the little shopping center near Johnson's and the Growing Years children's consignment shop.

Hi,

I am in the same situation as you and lost 22 lbs last year. This fall I took about 22 high end items to a consignment store and only ended up with a check for $120 that I got 6 months later.

I started Ebaying my summer items and since May I have made over $500. I do all of my postings on Sundays.

I was worried about going to the post office too as I also have no time to get there but you can get the USPS flat rate shipping boxes sent to you for free and then get the postman to pick them up at your door.

Ebay is totally the way to go in my book as you have much more control over what you are selling.

I have done it both ways and have found someone to consign for me on ebay and have made more $ that way. I just leave everything in a box on my front porch and send them an email and they pick up and do all the photos and listings.

Ebay is probably going to net you more $$ than consignment. Plus, you don't get to set the price the consignment shop asks for your items (in most cases) and you only get 40-50% of selling price.

If I could recommend it, wait to sell until right around the first week of August or later (but no later than mid-Sept). The summer months are abysmally slow and you won't get nearly as much $$ for your clothes than if you wait until people get back from vacations, start shopping ebay for back-to-school and shop around for adult clothes too.

Good luck!

Hi there - who do you use to consign for you on ebay? I have so many clothes that are in near perfect condition that I need to sell to make extra money (mother of 2 and in the middle of a divorce....). Thanks.
