Wondering if Rice is out of reach? 3.8 kid at Big 3...ACT 34 with strong ECs (don't want to elaborate due to outing). Is it absurd for him to shoot for it? I've heard both sides of the coin (i.e. Don't apply, no one gets in) to the opposite. Not sure how kids from this area do. So much to love about it....
What do you want us to say? Your kid might get in.
No one can tell you for sure. If he doesn't apply, however, he won't get in. That's for sure. GL.
My DS, a Big 3 grad, is at Rice and loves it. HS GPA was 3.6 unweighted with most rigorous math and science courses school offered. SATs were 1360 -- I have no idea how that translates into ACT since my kids have all done SATs. Very positive recommendations. Strong extracurriculars, including varsity athlete (not recruited at Rice) and a national academic competition, but it's not like he founded an orphanage with Mother Teresa.
We got the same message about Rice from the college counselor for a kid with very strong math/science classes and 99% SAT's, also at a good private. DC focused in, however, on another school that was in the same category and after the SAT's came in and he showed a lot of interest and described how it would be a perfect fit, the counselor seems to be supporting the choice as ED. So, if your kid really likes Rice, I'd go for it, just make sure there is a back-up plan.
DD had very similar stats to your kid. Apply ED and show major interest. And work very, very hard on the essays. Good luck! Our daughter absolutely loves the place!
if he applies early, YES
This is my post. Just want to correct my poor typing: SATs were 2360; not 1360. Sorry about that. |
