Rutgers
JMU West Virginia Hofstra Towson Hood Kid struggles with ADHD. Does not want to be too far from home. Does not drive. Is very social and wants an active social life (which makes me want to choose the least expensive school in case they struggle academically). Music business - or possibly some other type business. Very outgoing, people oriented person. |
I read that Hofstra has good support services |
Is cost a factor and which are in-state options? I think a kid like this could do well at JMU, but I might pick Towson if it’s cheaper and closer to home. |
JMU is NOT a good choice for an ADHD kid. Both on campus and off campus (private pay) services are overwhelmed. |
For campus life - Cornell hands down. |
We are in DC so all we have is the DC TAG (10K grant). Kid has maintained a B average in high school, so some of these options are quite affordable with that 10K off and the merit aid offered. Costs with 10K DC Tag and merit aid: Rutgers - 40K JMU - 33K West Virginia 26K - B average gets you 8K in merit automatically Hofstra 50K (25K in merit aid) Towson - 24K - B average gets you 10K in merit aid Hood - 33K - 30K in merit aid 50K / year is our outer limit. so I just worry at choosing Hofstra - if kid goes off the rails there's not as much of a chance of paying for a 5th year. On the other hand, Hofstra might be a better choice considering NY internships and smaller size/support structure. I put mine out here because there are always the questions of where can B-average kids go. AND, I've become a big fan of that idea of buyer/seller schools. Was so surprised at the merit aid offered. |

| Thank you for sharing! I kind of changed my mind after I saw the numbers. I pick Towson or Hood, depending on how your kid felt on visits. Well done! |
Thanks so much for posting this. I too have an ADHD kid who works very hard to maintain a B average (I mean real B, not 3.8 like people around here claim is a B average). Purely on reputation, I think Rutgers or JMU but agree you have to go with whichever school sets kid up for best success academically. That said, probably not Hood due to reputation and the other good options you have on your list. Congrats. |

UC Davis (CS) vs University of Michigan (CS).
We are in-state for CA. Not sure if Michigan is worth 75k/year when we have an in-state option that costs 35k/year. Us parents prefer Davis over Michigan, but my kid doesn’t care for the campus or location. They had their hopes up for UCLA, UCSB, or UCI but I told them Davis is still a great school in a nice setting. |
UC Davis. Close to tech hubs and lower cost. |
I graduated from St. John’s College about 30 years ago. Great school with lots of grads going into law, medicine, or academia. Very interesting to see the variety and depth of occupations among my classmates. I have a very decent and satisfying career but not on their level. |
I'd say GMU because Info Systems is great there |
Hands down. Williams...says a Math Major who went on to grad school at MIT in Math. |
