Girls at TPMS magnet

Anonymous
What is the ratio of girls to boys at the TPMS magnet? I've heard there are more boys but I wasn't sure how uneven it was. What's the experience like for girls?

Is gender taken into account in admissions?

I've read here that gender was irrelevant.

Gender is irrelevant? What does that mean? In society in general?

More boys than girls. Gender is not given preference in admissions.

Should of added that in 2014 the breakdown was 57% male/ 42% female. Source: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/info/choice/ChoiceStudyReport-Version2-20160307.pdf

My DD, who doesn't have a particularly strong interest in STEM, has really enjoyed all the magnet classes. The math teachers are strong and science classes a lot of fun. She has even enjoyed coding. More importantly, she had found a caring, supportive, encouraging group of girls (and boys).

PP again, while there may be more boys, it is not a noticeable difference. The imbalance may be more apparent at Blair.

Is it really true that they don't balance for gender?

They try to balance, but more girls choose Eastern over Takoma and skew the balance. Eastern has a similar girl over boy balance.

What do they do to try?

Invite almost equal number of boys and girls. Then girls choose Easter and selection moves to waitlist (not every year.)
They are not "required" to replace girl with girl. They look for the best fit.
Also some kids leave after or during 6th grade. Both girls and boys leave.
Most often citing long commute.
I think statistically more girls leave, but I have known at least 2 boys who left from W cluster.

Are you sure about this? I don't think they can consider gender when making offers. The only thing they can do is try to up applications from girls. But in practice it's true, the numbers aren't that dramatic. I don't believe the numbers are worse at Blair, either, as was speculated.

If you look at the Choice Program report the ratio of boys to girls in Blair increases.
