Dental Work while TTC

Anonymous
Is this safe? I need to have bridge/crown work done. Should I wait to get pregnant? I'm 41 so don't want to wait.

Could you schedule it right after your period would start and then reconsider (research, cancel if necessary) if you think you might be pregnant at that point? Dental work generally is put off during pregnancy as much as possible, and I found it tricky logistically with a new baby as well.

I was ver frustrated by this when ttc b/c I had make checkups 6 mos in advance but was scared to take x-rays if I could be preg. So cancelled once. Then when I had a real dental issue that I wanted checked I found out I was preg the day before so cancelled that too. Nearly broke down in tears arguing with the receptionist who was trying to charge me in full. I ended up going to another dentist in the 2nd tri n luckily he said he didn't see anything but didn't want to do x-rays or work unless he had to. Said to come back post-partum. I was told x-Ray with shield is fine. I would talk to your dentist and see how urgent this is. If you have a lot of anxiety over ttc like I did I would wait. Otherwise you go ahead. Good luck.

Why not go ahead and schedule the work and just take a pregnancy test a few days before hand? In general it is okay to have dental work done during pregnancy, although some providers prefer if you wait until the 2nd or 3rd trimester. Periodontal disease is thought to be one of the causes of permaturity, so it definitely is not a good idea to put off dental work.
