Calvin College

Calvin is a smallish college in Grand Rapids, MI that historically has catered to families that are part of the Christian Reformed Church. Christian Reform is a branch of Calvinist Protestantism primarily practiced by Dutch Americans. Nowadays I'd say Calvin is similar to many other Christian universities, such as Wheaton, Gordon or Hope colleges. It has a good reputation within its own community, but if you're not from that background you might feel a bit out of place. Fairly liberal intellectually.

It is pretty conservative even for a conservative and religious area. It is working on getting its fiscal house in order. Grand Rapids though is turning into a "hot" city with lots going on.

Took over the Oval Office after Harding died.

I'm curious to hear more opinions about Calvin College. My DC has received a lot of interest from a coach, but is hesitant to respond because he thinks it is "too religious".
Is that an accurate assumption?

PP here. Sorry. I think I answered my own question simply by looking at their "About" section of their website.

I went to a evangelical/Christian school and Calvin is where all of the kids who didn't get into Wheaton went.

Isn't this Betsy Devos's alma mater?

It's a pleasant Midwest private college full of clean cut and pleasant religious kids. Grand Rapids is fairly booming small city in the Midwest.

DeVos is an alum.

Not in the same league as Wheaton or Hillsdale, but better than Liberty or Grove City.

Good to know. Thanks.

Our DS was being recruited by Grove City and he decided it was too conservative. Calvin is one contacting him now and our DS did express to them that he was concerned that it seemed very faith based from the website.

Both are on the "Colleges That Change Lives" list. Wheaton is explicitly Christian and is considered more academically rigorous than, say, Liberty, Grove City or Calvin.

Hillsdale is conservative and non-sectarian but attracts a lot of Christians.

If you're on Calvin's radar, I'm surprised you've not heard of either of them.
