What is with the obsession with STA and Beauvoir on this board?

Anonymous
We are at Beauvoir and I cringe every time I see a new thread about either school on this board, as most seem to be taken over by parents that don't even have children at either school but seem to hate the schools and write inflammatory and negative responses. If you don't attend the school, why bother to respond to a poster? It would never occur to me to post on threads at schools that my children were not attending.

Ugggh. If there is anything more tiresome than the DCUM obsession with Beauvoir and STA, it is the curiosity people have with the DCUM obsession with Beauvoir and STA.

Don't read the posts. They aren't written by Beauvoirites, who are by most accounts happy with their school. They're not written by STA families, who are almost universally ecstatic with their school. They're written by Cathedral trolls with major axes to grind.

Why no obsession with NCS? Sexism?

The Beauvoir/STA obsession is largely created and fueled by insecure, combative, and surprisingly uninformed Beauvoir/STA parents. Just look at the first few pages of threads in this forum. You have new Beauvoir and STA parents looking for tips, a Beauvoir parent asking how to interpret his child’s report card, an STA parent asking if her child would be better off at BCC, STA parents battling about teacher quality, an STA parent posting about how to get into STA, a Beauvoir parent asking about Capital Cotillion, an STA parent asking how easy it is to escape STA, a new STA parent asking how much money matters, a Beauvoir parent asking if NCS and STA kids get together, a Beauvoir parent asking about outplacement, etc. For some reason, parents at Sidwell, Maret, GDS, etc. do not have these kinds of discussions to anywhere the same extent. In Beavoir’s defense, it might be said that its size contributes to the amount of wacky back-and-forth, but I’m not sure what STA’s excuse is.

Maybe parents from every other school EXCEPT Beauvoir & STA should start a thread, & just inundate the board.

Maybe parents at other schools talk to each other in person instead of online.

Why just "other" schools? That should include Beauvoir & STA, too. Not everyone on the board is interested in just these 2 schools.

Phew. Someone did a lot of searching to come up with that list. Obsessed much?

And I happen to know that lots of the posts came from a non-parent. I'll leave it at that.

A lot of searching? Just scan the first few pages. Where are the threads about Sidwell or GDS?

More of the wackiness. Okay, so how do you know that lots of the posts come from a non-parent?

I wouldn't be leaving it "at that" then, would I?

If I had a serious question about MY school, I'd never post it here or mention my school by name. I'm somewhat new to DCUM, but it seems that the posts on this forum have become increasingly negative when schools are asked about specifically. I find that the general posts bring out the folks I'd like to hear and learn from - but mention a school by name and you'll rally some seriously bitter ax-grinders (who love to post - again and again and again).

So you're generating those posts?

Whether she generated the posts is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is that these post seem to generate long, responsive threads from folks at one end of the spectrum to the other. I could do without the vitriol and snark found in a fair amount of the posts, but by and large, you'll find helpful, informative (and informed) responses. And come to think of it, even the vitriolic and snarky responses are often quite telling, and in their own way insight-producing, if not good for a chuckle or two. For those of us who are not interested in anything Beauvoir related, well, no one is forcing you to read any of these posts.
