Nicest place you've ever stayed in North Carolina?

Trying to plan a trip for the fall and really need some ideas. I keep looking at cabins on vrbo and such and thinking..meh.

North Carolina's a big state. Usually people have some idea in mind of where they'd like to vacation, then they seek appropriate lodging.

Sorry, yes I do mean mountains. We are staying in Asheville for one leg of it, trying to figure out what else to do.

My inlaws own a summer home in Cashiers. They spend winter and fall Florida. I don't understand why they don't stay in Cashiers year round. It is so insanely beautiful.

Are you taking kids? If not, I'd suggest visiting the town of Hot Springs and getting a cabin or suite so that you can enjoy soaking in the natural hot springs. The town itself is quaint and has one or two nice restaurants. Not a lot to do except hike, relax, and soak - which I think is perfect for a couple's retreat.

+1 for Cashiers. Or Highlands which is right down the road from Cashiers.
