Laytonsville Elementary-- combined classes?

Anonymous
One of our son's friends went out to eat with us the other day and told us that so many kids have pulled out of the Laytonsville district, that they have teachers that now teach both 4th and 5th grade. We pulled our DS out and put him in private this year, but didn't realize that so many other kids had left as well. Are there really that few students left?

According to Wikipedia, less than 400 people live there. Combined classes aren't necessarily a bad thing. My DD is in private and has 3 subjects that are split grade level. It's actually nice for kids who aren't in the middle of the bell curve because the teachers can form multiple groups.

OP here. I'm only asking because my son went to LES until this year, and this is the first year (if true) that they have done that.

OP again. There are also a lot of kids with Gaithersburg addresses that go to LES, not just within the Laytonsville city limits.

Why is everybody pulling out? We used to be zoned for that elementary before we moved for work and I was under the impression that it was pretty good?

We are are Laytonsville, and have a 5th grader. The enrollment dropped so we lost a teacher. There is one homeroom class that has approximately 10 4th graders and 10 5th graders. It's for homeroom only. Once class kids are divided by grade. For example the combined teacher may be the science teacher for all of 4 & 5th grade, just depending on who is in the classroom at that time.

At least that is my understanding.

Also it's a great school and neighborhood. There are a number of new developments that should continue to increase enrollment over the next few years.

Enrollment dropped due to people moving to privates or to other clusters in order to avoid GMS, not LES.

OP here. We went private to avoid GMS. I assume a lot of others did the same.

We went magnets to avoid GMS/GHS. LES is great but MS/HS suck.

This is rumor mongering. OP heard something from a friend and it has snowballed now into people asserting that everyone is pulling out of this school. The data from the most recent year shows the numbers of kids per grade is very consistent, and has even recently gone up in 5th grade: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/glance/currentyear/schools/02051.pdf I have no allegiances here except a dislike of rumor, and of people making important decisions based on what they've "heard," inevitably from upper income white people, about the decline of schools.

What does race have to do with it? Rumors with no basis in fact come from everyone, not just white people.

True. But I have yet to see rumors of black and Hispanic families fleeing schools en masse because of more white people coming in. And make no doubt this is about race. Ask people what they think "sucks" about Gaithersburg Middle compared to Laytonsville Elementary.

OP here. I'm Hispanic.

You are a moron. It's not about race, it's about performance. You cannot blame everything on race.
