Time to watch The Hunting Ground/Netflix

Part of the problem with sexual assault on college campuses is the fact that each year many schools erase the previous years' difficult lessons. As parent of freshman son, a friend who has a freshman daughter urged me to watch this documentary. It's on Netflix and Youtube, this is the season! Good luck everyone to your new and returning students!!!

I have no idea about this doc, but part of the pattern of rape on campus comes in the first few weeks. Students in a confusing new environment with directions to go out and explore and make friends without a support system established. My DD's school sends out alerts. Two days before school an assault occurred one block from campus while a girl was walking back to her dorm alone at 3 am. The alerts help quite a bit and there are plenty of reminders prior to attacks, but parents need to constantly tell the students there are alternatives like safe walks/rides.

Yes to this but most sexual assaults aren't someone jumping out from a dark alley. They're acquaintances or happen when alcohol was involved.

Then it's also time to read this:

"Switched at Birth," a sort of YA series from ABC Family has done one of the best treatments of this issue I've seen, but it's a multi-episode story arc.

Definitely worth sitting down and watching with sons and daughters who are off to college.
