PTA- How much do your dues cost and how much do they suggest you pay per child as a donation?

Anonymous
New to this school. Dues are higher than expected but that is fine. We can afford the dues. Suggested donation PER CHILD is $150?! Eeek! I understand it is just a suggested amount, but wow. I was going to donate $25 TOTAL and now I feel like I'm cheap for not giving $300 for our 2 kids, so may just join instead and skip donating. Does your school suggest donation amounts per kid? The donation is supposed to cover all fundraising, but my neighbor said you still get asked for money in one way or another throughout the year, so would rather spread it out. She also said last year the suggested amount per kid was lower. I guess we're not in Kansas anymore... (Not from Kansas, but you get the point). I know they do a lot of work and things cost money, just was surprised that's all.

No idea. I didn't even realize my DD's former elementary school had a PTA until she was in 5th grade. I believe the phrase that best applies is "I ain't got time for that shit,"

I used to race out of work to get to her by 6pm, then we'd get home at 7 and I'd aim to give her dinner by 7:45 plus homework, bath/shower/unwinding? Had no idea there was a PTA.

Just give the $25. Don't feel guilty about not donating more.

Ours costs $10 per adult. No other donations. Over the course of the year there are other fundraising events but no one has to buy any of it.

Our suggeste donation is $150 per child in Bethesda. On the West coast our public school PTA asked for $450 per kid because of the dearth of funding

$25 for the family (more than one kid) membership. They do fundraisers through the year but I do not participate in anything that requires selling stuff. We do participate in the pizza nights or social hours or restaurant days, to help fundraise a bit.

Our requires $25 to join, but suggests $500-$1000 per family.

Where is the school located. That is insane. Does the national PTA organization allow this? I understand it is suggested, but it seems shady or maybe greedy or both to even suggest this.

It's not. One of the NW DC public schools. There's a lot of affluence and they raise a lot this way. Many parents are happier to write a big check at the beginning of the year and call it a day.
