Smart phone recs for college freshman

| My DC has not had a cell phone but we think it's a good idea now. I'm hoping he can use some apps to help him be organized. He tends to lose things. Is there a cheap smart phone we can get? He doesn't need all the bells and whistles. |

| My DD is in 8th, has an iPhone and doesn't use it to stay organized. She hand-writes all her homework and deadlines in her physical planner. The only way she uses her cell phone in a school-related way is to set the alarm. |
